About this Parish
The Parish of Muckno comprises of the town of Castleblayney and its adjoining rural hinterland, including the Oram and Mullyash areas. The principal physical features of the parish are Lough Muckno, which is Co Monaghan's largest lake, and Mullyash mountain, which is the second-highest point in the county. The lake gave its name to the parish and to a monastery which can be traced back to the early part of the 7th century. Until the early 1700s the parish of Muckno was confined to the northern side of the lake, what is now the town being part of the adjoining parish of Clontibret. Today, the parish has over 1,500 families and a Roman Catholic population of approximately 4,700.
Saints associated with the parish are:St Maeldóid, A member of the Hanratty family and the founder of the monastery of Muckno. Feastday, 14 May;
St Ailell or Helias, A 10th century monk from Muckno who became abbot of a monastery in Cologne, Germany. Feastday, 11 April.
