About this Parish

The Parish of Cleenish is formed around the monastic site of Cleenish Island on Upper Lough Erne, County Fermanagh. It was here that St Columbanus began his period of study before going on to Bangor. Today, Cleenish is a border parish, extending for eighteen miles along the south-western boundary of the Diocese of Clogher. The Arney River is one of the distinguishing features of the parish terrain and it includes the village of Belcoo, which is a crossing point to County Cavan and nearby County Leitrim. The Catholic population of the parish is approximately 1,300.
