Parish Details

The parish of Magh Ene is the only part of the Diocese of Clogher that touches the Atlantic Ocean. Today, the parish includes the town of Bundoran and its hinterland, including 'The Rock' part of the town of Ballyshannon, that town being divided between the Diocese of Clogher and the Diocese of Raphoe by the River Erne. Magh Ene also includes the military and air-sea rescue base at Finner.

The fact that this parish is in Clogher owes much to the reform of the church during the 12th century. This reform saw the monastic settlement of St Ninnidh at Inis Muighe Saimh come under the political influence of the Airghialla kingdom and the ecclesial influence of the Augustinian monastery at Devenish. By the 18th century, with the number of Catholics increasing, the 'Moy' or lower-lying part of Inis Mughe Saimh became a parish of its own, mistakenly called Inishmacsaint until the name Magh Ene was imposed by Bishop Eugene O'Callaghan in 1955.

Saint Associated with the Parish:  St Ninnidh – Parish cemetery is named after this 6^th century saint who brought the Christian faith to the area. A window in the Rosary Chapel in the Star of the Sea Church tells the story of his mission and witness.
