About this Parish
Geographically, this is the largest parish in the diocese, located at the westernmost extremity of County Fermanagh and bordering Counties Donegal and Leitrim. Its area includes lowland on the north and south of Lower Lough Erne and mountainous areas extending to the Leitrim border at Lough Melvin.
The boundaries of this ancient parish, and its name, have changed many times over the centuries, most recently in the 1980s. Its present name is taken from an island on Lower Lough Erne which was an ancient monastic site - Inis Muighe Samh ('the island of sorrell plain') or Inishmacsaint, and which is now in the Parish of Derrygonnelly (Botha). That monastic site was founded by St Ninnidh in the 6th century and it was an important point of the Erne waterway.
Today, the parish of Inis Muighe Samh includes the villages of Belleek and Garrison together with outlying areas, some of which was formerly part of the old parish of Carn (now Pettigo).
There are approximately 800 Catholic families in this parish, and a population of around 2,200.
