Parish Details

The Parish of Tullycorbet covers a significant part of mid-County Monaghan. The parish is made up of the town of Ballybay and two rural areas, namely Tullycorbet and Ballintra-Drumhowan. The middle part of the parish contains many lakes while the townlands on its southern side lead into a series of hills towards Lough Egish.

The parish traces its history back to the early middle ages when Tullaigh Charbaid was an ecclesial site of note, in the townland of Terrygeely. The Church of Ireland parish of Ballybay was developed out of Tullycorbet during the late 17th and early 18th century. Today, with minor exceptions, both parishes are coterminous. The linen industry once played a very significant part in the life of this area, impacting its economic, social and religious heritage.

There are approximately 800 families in the parish and a Catholic population of around 2,000.
