St Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan, was packed to capacity on Sunday afternoon, 14 June, for the celebration of a very moving Mass of Thanksgiving to mark the Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary) of the Ordination to Priesthood of the Bishop of Clogher, Bishop Larry Duffy.
A native of Magheracloone, Co Monaghan, Bishop Duffy was ordained a priest on 13 June 1976 by the then Bishop of Clogher, Dr Patrick Mulligan, alongside Fr Michael Daly, now PP of Donaghmoyne and the late Archbishop Noel Treanor from Tyholland and later to be Bishop of Down and Connor and Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union. Bishop Duffy offered Sunday’s Mass for the soul of Archbishop Treanor and for his family.
Sunday’s attendance included the retired Bishop of Clogher, Dr Joseph Duffy and the Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher, Right Rev Dr Ian Ellis. Bishop Larry was joined in the celebration of the Mass by priests and deacons from across the diocese and by other priests from elsewhere, including classmates from St Patrick’s College, Carlow. The main concelebrants of the Mass alongside Bishop Duffy were Fr Michael Daly and Monsignor La Flynn, Prior of Lough Derg, who was also ordained in July 1976.
