Bishop Duffy Expresses Sympathy on the Death of Bishop Brian Hannon

STATEMENT BY BISHOP LARRY DUFFY

ON THE DEATH OF THE RIGHT REV BRIAN HANNON, FORMER CHURCH OF IRELAND BISHOP OF CLOGHER

Monday 10 January 2022

Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time

It is with deep sorrow that I have learned of the death earlier today of Bishop Brian Hannon, Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher from 1986 until 2001. Although I never knew Bishop Brian personally, I am very much aware of the immense contribution he made to the Christian life on this diocese. He ministered here, as Rector, Dean and Bishop, during what were difficult and challenging days. He never allowed such challenges to deflect from our shared Christian mission to build up the kingdom of God here; to love God, to heal wounds and to work together for peace. Bishop Brian laid the groundwork for much that has been built upon since then in terms of inter-Church dialogue, witness and friendship.

I extend to his wife Maeve, to his sons and other family members and to the wider Church of Ireland community here in the Diocese of Clogher my deepest sympathy and the assurance of my prayers.

‘O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways.’ (Psalm 127)
