Bishop Larry Duffy, the Bishop of Clogher, has invited people to join in marking the Easter Triduum 2019. In a special message, he said:
‘A parish priest was once heard to say on Palm Sunday, “This week we pray with our feet.” It was his way of inviting people to walk in the footsteps of the Master, moving step by step, scene by scene from the upper room to the open tomb.
‘As feet are washed on Holy Thursday we hear and ponder Jesus’ call to be a good and caring neighbour by serving family and community.
‘On Good Friday, our veneration of the wood of the cross is our response to the generosity of the Father who so loved the world that he gave his only Son who died for us so that we might live. Saturday is a time of quiet and prayerful waiting with Mary who has lost her beloved son; a day to remember our departed ones.
‘The Easter Vigil joyfully celebrates liberation, resurrection and new life. Christ, our light, the new Moses, leads his people to freedom; to victory over sins and death. Through our baptism we journey through death to resurrection with Christ.
‘God’s immense love is the origin of all we celebrate in Holy Week. St John accurately captures what we celebrate – ‘He had loved those who were his own in the world, but now he showed how perfect his live was.’ (Jn. 13:1).’
Bishop Duffy concludes:
‘I invite you all to take part in our liturgies of Holy Week so that, together, we may celebrate God’s perfect love for us all.’
HOLY WEEK LITURGIES IN THE DIOCESE OF CLOGHER
During Holy Week the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, beginning with his messianic entrance into Jerusalem. The Lenten season lasts until the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. The Easter Triduum then begins and lasts until the evening of Easter Sunday.
The Easter Triduum is celebrated as one continuous liturgy, representing one indivisible mystery – the Paschal mystery of Christ’s life, death and resurrection. Hence there is no concluding rite or blessing at the end of the liturgy on Holy Thursday or Good Friday. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. On Holy Saturday, during the Easter Vigil, the joyful word “Alleluia!” rings out once more. The Lord has truly risen! The season of Easter then lasts for fifty days, until Pentecost.
It is noteworthy that three parishes in the diocese – Irvinestown and Lisnaskea / Maguiresbridge in Co Fermanagh and Killanny on the Monaghan-Louth border – will celebrate Dawn Mass on Easter Sunday morning.
- Rossigh Bay, Lough Erne (Irvinestown), Co Fermanagh at 6.15am
- Holy Cross Cemetery, Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh at 6.30am
- Killanny, Co Louth 7am
The longstanding Polish tradition of blessing baskets of fresh food on Holy Saturday will be honoured in four parishes across on the diocese on that day
- St Michael’s Church, Enniskillen at 2pm
- Church of the Holy Cross, Lisnaskea at 11.30am
- St Joseph’s Church, Park Street, Monaghan at 11am
- St Patrick’s Church, Broomfield at 11am
