Statement from Bishop Michael Jackson on the
Retirement of Bishop Joseph Duffy and Appointment
of Monsignor Liam MacDaid
From the Rt Revd Dr Michael Jackson , Bishop of Clogher:
‘I have learned today of the retirement of Bishop Duffy, my fellow bishop of Clogher and longstanding friend in the Gospel and in the work of God. Returning to my home diocese of Clogher, which is also Bishop Duffy’s home diocese, in 2002 I found Bishop Duffy welcoming, supportive and warm hearted. Bishop Duffy has cared assiduously for the people and priests of Clogher Diocese and has developed its educational focus. Not only has his encyclopaedic knowledge of Mediaeval Irish History enhanced this ministry, so also has his commitment to Europe and Communications. His reordering of Monaghan Cathedral will stand as a lasting testimony to his energy to liturgical nuance and directness. We have been enriched by knowing the bishop and by his commitment to shared ecumenical endeavour. I wish Bishop Duffy all health and happiness in retirement.
I also offer my congratulations to Monsignor MacDaid on his appointment as Bishop of Clogher. Monsignor MacDaid has already forty years of deep and varied pastoral, educational and administrative experience of his home diocese. Having come to know the new bishop over the last eight years and to value his friendship, I look forward to working with him in the years ahead and to developing and deepening personal and diocesan relationships.
May God continue to bless them both.’
